GIBA is being developed as an independent professional body dedicated to advancing knowledge, competency and long-term capability across the digital built environment.

This page outlines its institutional purpose, scope and current stage of development.

Purpose

GIBA’s purpose is stewardship in the public interest: to define, organise, govern and develop professional knowledge and long-term industry capability for the digital built environment.

That purpose is expressed first through a structured body of knowledge — the GIBA Book of Knowledge (GBOK) — and, over time, through the competency, certification and governance architectures that surround it.

Mandate

GIBA’s intended mandate is to act as a steward institution for the field: convening and maintaining professional knowledge, and developing the competency and governance frameworks that give it lasting value.

This mandate is being established through the institution’s development. Its formal scope and authority are subject to governance confirmation, and are not asserted here as settled.

Scope

GIBA’s scope is the digital built environment: the people, processes, information and technology through which built assets are designed, delivered and operated across their lifecycle.

Four architecture layers

GIBA keeps four architectures deliberately separate, so each can be developed and governed on its own terms. The knowledge architecture is under controlled development, while the competency, certification and governance architectures remain planned institutional capabilities.

  • Knowledge

    The structured body of professional knowledge — the GBOK — organised into families, domains, chapters and sections.

  • Competency

    In development

    The intended model of observable performance, judgement and responsibility — distinct from knowledge.

  • Certification

    In development

    A future architecture for recognising assessed competence, separate from any publication. No credential levels or titles have been approved.

  • Governance

    The change-control and stewardship discipline that keeps the other three layers accountable and transparent.

Current development status

GIBA is in an architecture and first-draft development phase. There are currently no operational certification schemes, membership products, chapters, accredited training providers or academic-alignment agreements.

The knowledge architecture (GBOK Blueprint v1.2) is a draft for board review, not an approved or published standard. The founding Digital Built Environment family and Domain 1 architecture are indicative, pending ratification.

Governance development

GIBA develops its knowledge and decisions under a documented change-control discipline. Its leadership is presented per controlled records only, and no board, committee or governance body beyond the working contributors is claimed at this stage.

The expanded institutional name, the approval authority and the formal governance structure remain provisional and are subject to governance confirmation.

International and industry value

GIBA is being shaped with regional roots and an international outlook. Its intended value is to give the built-environment sector a shared, vendor-neutral foundation of professional knowledge and capability that serves practitioners, employers and institutions alike.
